The more you indulge your desires, the greater the pain later on. In the beginning, it may feel painful to not pursue a desire.
But, if you restrain yourself—if you can begin to train the mind—while there may be a little pain at first, there’ll be greater pleasure later on. You will admire yourself, you will be proud of yourself, you won’t ever feel unhappy about that. And that pride will last longer, that happiness will last longer, than the momentary joy.
We should become that master. That is the real freedom; that is the real victory.
